The Dogs Playing Poker poster, which Atlanta Poker News uses on its Facebook page, is an iconic image in American culture. The painting, originally titled Judge St. Bernard Wins on a Bluff, conjures a “lack of taste.” The irony is that the Brown & Bigelow company selected the painting as part of an advertising campaign to sell cigars. I presume that flavor of a 110 year old cigar leaves much to be desired and little to the imagination.
A quick survey on the subject of gambling animals brings different reactions. The American comedian Dennis Miller has a couple different perspectives on the subject:
“There is nothing funny about dogs playing poker. There is nothing remotely cute about animals with gambling problems. If you look closely at those paintings, you can tell that most of those dogs are playing with money they can’t afford to lose. And sadder still, it takes seven of their dollars to make one of ours.” -Dennis Miller
But what do the dogs win or lose in this game of skill? Listen to another take from Dennis Miller. Finally, the ‘All In Dog’ is Atlanta Poker News’ money shot of the week. If you are all in on poker, what are some of your favorite videos or pictures with animals? . I’m not sure why Miller is so keen on this subject, but he does support personal liberty – even for dogs.
